Our History:
Our Lodge was chartered on February 5, 1950, with John Battaglia serving
as our first President. The Monterey Lodge evolved from a club of Italian
Americans – a club named – “Amerigo Vespucci.”
At its start the new Monterey Lodge consisted of
Italian Americans, most of whom were Italian immigrants and families with
roots in Sicilia – specifically from the provinces of Palermo and Trapani
– and most of them were fishermen.
All of our charter members who continued their
membership in our Lodge are now deceased. The last one who passed away
was Jerome Lucido, who has been honored by the Italian Government as a
Commendatore in the 90’s.
To date our Lodge has been led by a total of twelve
Presidents during the past 50 years:

What is OSIA?
Italian Americans celebrating our heritage and building a better
tomorrow.
OSIA
was established in the Little Italy neighborhood of New York City on June
22, 1905, by Vincenzo Sellaro, M.D., and five other fellow immigrants from
Italy who came to the United States during the great Italian migration of
the late 19th and 20th centuries. During its history, OSIA has been
involved in promoting immigration legislation; assisting in the
assimilation process; supporting cooperation, trade and diplomatic
relations between the United States and Italy; initiating social and
fraternal events; encouraging educational achievements through
scholarships; serving local communities through a variety of cultural
events and raising funds for local charities.
First In Involvement
"The basic thing that the Sons of Italy as an organization has done is
to remind us that it is perfectly acceptable, and, as a matter of fact,
desirable to be both an American and a person who recognizes his or her
own special origins."
Former New York Governor
Mario M. Cuomo
First in Family Values
"I was taught that family was always
number one... before making movies, before any TV shows,
before any recording contracts. Those ideals that were instilled
in me come from deep Italian roots and deep Italian hearts."
